The Nomad Residence Permit has recently be introduced for Non-EU nationals who wish to move temporarily to Malta whilst working remotely.This option allows applicants to continue working for a country outside of Malta whilst legally residing in Malta.
A Nomad Residence Permit will be issued for one year and can be renewed upon application at the discretion of Residency Malta ( the official Government entity responsible for managing and promoting Malta’s residency-by-investment programmes), as long as the applicant still meets the set eligibility criteria.
Applicants who are interested in staying for less than a year will be issued with a National Visa for the duration of their stay.
Applicants who apply apply for this permit must be Third Country Nationals who prove they have remote work
Malta already has a thriving community of European digital nomads.
Main requirements:
The following criteria must be met in order to be eligible for this permit:
- Have a contract of work with an employer registered in a foreign country. OR
- Conduct business activities for a company registered in a foreign country and of which the applicant is a partner or shareholder OR
- Offer freelance or consulting services mostly to clients whose permanent establishments are in a foreign country, and with whom the applicant has a contract
- Applicant must reach a monthly income threshold of € 2 700 plus a 20% extra per family member.
Family members include:
- 1) The spouse of the main applicant in a monogamous marriage or in a relationship having a similar status to a marriage, including a civil union, domestic partnership, common law marriage, where at the CEO of Residency Malta Agency’s discretion to authorise other relationships having a similar status as aforesaid.
- 2) A Child, including an adopted child, of the main applicant or of his spouse, who at the time of application, is less than eighteen years of age.
- 3) A child, including an adopted child, of the main applicant or of his spouse, who at the time of application is over eighteen years of age, is not married, and who proves to the agency at the time of application, thatchy are principally dependant on the main applicant.
Other requirements
- Hold a valid travel document
- Have health insurance covering risks in Malta
- Hold a valid rental agreement or property deed for property in Malta
- Pass a background verification check
Submission of application
The required documents for the application are to be collected and together with all supporting documentation is to be submitted, by email, to the Agency.
The administrative fee of € 300 per applicant must be received by the Agency
The application will be processed within 30 days after a review and backgrounds checks have been done.
If the application is successful, the applicant will be invited to proceed to Malta as per instructions on the approval letter.
Non-Eu Nationals require a visa for Malta 90 to 180 days. Should the applicant be wanting to stay for longer than the duration of the visa, they may finalise the process of application by submitting their biometrics and documentation in person at the Residency Malta Agency’s offices.

Taxation for Digital Nomads
Malta has a very interesting tax regime for digital nomads, where foreign income is not taxed if it’s not remitted to the country itself. They will only be taxed locally on income earned for work done for Maltese companies, if any.
